A century or so later, Ernst Chladni refined the experiment into a more systematic inquiry. Using different plate shapes and a finer sand that yielded clearer images, he watched the grains leap into regular patterns—now called Chladni figures. Each frequency gave rise to a distinctly different design.

In the mid-1900s, Hans Jenny revived and expanded these ideas. Using crystal oscillators and quartz sand, he sang into cardboard pipes, creating symmetrical sound drawings. Lower tones, he found, created clearer, simpler imagery, whereas higher ones yielded more complex patterns.

Jenny was struck by how different cymatic patterns appeared depending on bass frequencies, pitch, and amplitude. In his own words—"this is not unregulated chaos; it is a dynamic but ordered pattern." And that observation still stands at the center of cymatics today.

Many point to the historical shift from the natural 432 Hz tuning to the harsher 440–441 Hz standard as an early example of mass frequency manipulation, pulling human biology just slightly out of harmony with its natural rhythm.
